Dear Troubadours and Families:

Welcome to Santa Susana Magnet High School, Home of the Troubadours, for the 2018-2019 school year! I look forward to seeing all of you when you return to school in August, ready to demonstrate your Scholarship, Skill, Honor, and Service in striving to do your personal best. Being a Troubadour affords you unique opportunities to explore your intellectual interests and your creative capacities through authentic, hands-on learning experiences.

Santa Susana Magnet High School is one of the top high schools in the County, the State, and the Country! We continue to be recognized by the State of California as an official Arts, Media, and Entertainment Demonstration Site for other schools that would like to try to replicate our great successes. We will also continue to build on our impressive STEM programs (science, technology, engineering, and math), our nationally-known and competitive Mock Trial program, and our rigorous academic programs. Throughout the year, our students, faculty, and staff will have multiple opportunities to celebrate our students’ scholarship and skill through various performances, competitions, and showcases. I encourage our entire Troubadour community to participate in as many events as possible and to show pride in our amazing school!

On a personal note, I am excited to begin my fourteenth year as an administrator and my third year as Principal of Santa Susana Magnet High School. Each year, I am renewed by working with such talented and amazing young people, in addition to such a dedicated and accomplished staff. This year, I am pleased to welcome two new members to the SSHS leadership team: Mr. Jason Quartararo, assistant principal (last names A-K); and Mrs. Denise Johnson, counselor (last names G-N). We also welcome to our faculty Mr. Lynskey, dance teacher; and Mrs. Langford, science teacher. Serving in new roles at our school: Mr. John Garner will now be our Stagecraft and Broadcasting teacher, while Ms. Karen Giles will continue to work toward helping students express their creativity as part of our Visual Arts Department. Working together – students, staff, and parents, our potential is unlimited and I anticipate that Team Troubadour will reach new and wonderful heights this year!

Students and parents, I ask for your support to make this year as successful as possible. Here are a few tips and strategies:

  • Get involved! Attend school events. Students, join clubs and take classes that are both rigorous and for which you have a passion. Parents, we have an active PTSA and Booster Club. We will always need volunteers and financial support to ensure that our programs have the resources they need to meet our students’ needs.
  • Use Aeries regularly. Students and Parents should login at least weekly to monitor academic progress. Parents, please be sure to check off on all authorizations prior to registration.
  • Advocate for yourself. We have time built into our bell schedule, our ACE (Academic and Career Exploration) period for students to speak and work with your teachers when you have academic concerns. Meet with your counselor when you have personal or social concerns. We are here for you! Email is the best way to reach your child’s teachers when you have questions or concerns and you should receive a response within 48 hours.

Again, welcome to Santa Susana Magnet High School! It is going to be a great year!

Yours truly,

Jerry Block, Principal
