Santa Susana High School - Monday Message

Academic Decathlon 2018
Congratulations to Santa Susana's Academic Decathlon Team.
This year the team consisted of 18 students from 9th - 12th grade: Bryson Xiao, Sasha Avakyan, Aryan Agarwal, Sai Kacham, Vanesa Kawasaki, Chandni Sakthi, Clarissa Gomez, Richard Wang, Emily Tran, Adrean Pokala, Alison Huerto, Vivek Tarapara, Mahathi Ryali, Arjun Damerla, Nathan Miranda, Nikita Pokala, Shreya Agarwal.

This year we won 8 medals in the white division for the catagories of Speech, Science, Math, and Economics.
Bryson Xiao scored a perfect score in Math and won 1st place, 1st in Science and 3rd in Economics.
Vanesa Kawasaki won 1st place in Economics, 3rd place in Science and her Speech.
Aryan Agarwal won 3rd place in Speech and scored the highest overall points for SSHS
Adrean Pokalo won 3rd place in Speech.
Chandni Sakthi won the team spirit award.

Simi Valley Youth Summit

Students, make a difference in your community by sharing opinions and working towards solutions about issues you care about at the annual Simi Valley Youth Summit! The Summit will be held at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library and Museum on Friday, March 16, 2018 from 8:00 AM to 2:45 PM. Your attendance is approved as school business by the School District. The day will be filled with fun activities for teambuilding and leadership development. Plus you'll have the opportunity to speak with influential community leaders about the issues YOU care about! Breakfast and a catered lunch will be provided.

Register online at Youth Summit or pick up an application in the front office. You must register before Wednesday, February 21, 2018 for this FREE summit. Space is limited to the first 170 students, so don't delay and register today!

Senior Project

On March 16, 2018, Santa Susana High School will be having their first Comic Con! This will be held in the MPR from 5 - 8 P.M. We will be having a cosplay contest as well as a panel from members of the entertainment industry. Confirmed so far are:

  • Sound Director, Randy Coppinger
  • Lead Software Engineer of Overwatch, Bill Warnecke
  • Voice of Dr. Krieger of Archer, Lucky Yates

  • We will also be featuring projects from students 10th to 12th grade throughout the Convention.

    FREE Test Prep

    AP students and their parents:

    Did you know that SSHS has a free electronic resource that can help students study for AP exams? Testing and Education Reference Center database offers practice tests, full online study books, and success tips for most AP exams. This database also includes study resources for PSAT, SAT, and ACT tests as well.

    To access these resources click this link AP HELP. The school's password is susana. If you need any help, please stop by the library.

    Peer Tutoring Students at Santa Susana will be tutoring other students for free after school.

    Tutoring will take place from 3:00-4:00 in the following locations:
    Room 410 — Mondays and Tuesdays
    Room 408 — Wednesdays

    There is a math/science focus but all subjects are welcome including AP subjects.
    Peer tutors wanted! Earn volunteering hours!
    Applied Science Series  This year, SSHS will be hosting its first Applied Science Series to show case student achievements in the STEM field through research projects and presentations.
      There are four events:
    1. The Science Fair - January 23, 2018. **Completed**.
    2. Astronomy Night - Date pending. Astronomy Night will let students explore the field of astrophysics through direct viewing of the night sky with high-power telescopes.
    3. Med-X Speaker Symposium - March 17, 2018. The Med-X Speaker Symposium will feature presentations from future innovators who are using their education to change the field of medicine as well as a keynote speaker from the medical profession.
    4. STEAM Expo - April 20, 2018. STEAM Expo combines the arts and sciences to highlight the myriad of ways creativity can be applied to STEM.

     Mock Trial Fundraiser  Mock Trial is selling "World's Finest Chocolates " in Room 307. Come and get your chocolate (crisp, dark, milk, caramel, or almond) for $1/bar after school. The money goes to fund the Mock Trial competition held at the Ventura County Courthouse at the end of February. All chocolates are available while supplies last.

    Grief & Loss Counseling Groups
    In response to the emotional needs of our students, the Counseling Department will be providing short-term (8-week) groups on Grief and Loss, beginning in February. If you have a student to refer to these groups, please email your Counselor directly. The Counseling Department will then meet with each student individually to discuss this opportunity and provide parental consent forms for their participation.

    SAT Prep
    Interested in SAT prep, but don't have the time after school or on weekends? Solution: one-hour prep on late start Fridays. SAT prep begins Friday 2/23. The classes are offered at a discounted rate of $369 and are run through Tried & True Tutoring on SSHS campus in the College & Career Center. The price includes materials and full-length mock SAT pre- and post-tests! There are a limited number of scholarships available for students who cannot afford the cost but want to attend.
