Santa Susana High School - Monday Message

August 21, 2017

Message from Principal Block It was such a pleasure to welcome back our students and staff this week. On behalf of our entire faculty, I share with you how much we look forward to working with all of our students and supporting them as they reach for their potential. This year, we have revised our school-wide learning objectives for all of our students. In all that they do at Santa Susana High School, we hope that our students will demonstrate scholarship, skill, honor, and service. I encourage all of our students to communicate with their teachers, counselor, and administrators if ever they have a problem, question or concern. I am confident that 2017- 2018 will be a fantastic year!
 Bell Schedule

We will be following our regular bell schedules beginning on Monday, August 21.

Monday - Periods 1-9
Tuesday - Periods 1-9
Wednesday - Periods 1, 2, ACE, 4, 6, 8, 9
Thursday - Periods 1, 3, ACE, 5, 7, 8, 9
Friday - Late Start (9:00 AM) Periods 1-9

Eclipse Info

As you probably know, on Monday, August 21, California will experience a solar eclipse. This rare event will be a total solar eclipse for many parts of the country, but here in Southern California, only about 70 percent of the sun will be obscured. This will happen from about 9 to 11:45 a.m., with the maximum sun coverage happening around 10:20 a.m.

The safety of our students is our highest concern. The only safe way to look at a partial solar eclipse is through special glasses or hand-held solar viewers. Regular dark glasses will not offer proper protection.

Please speak to your children before Monday about staying safe during the eclipse by not looking directly at the sun (unless their teachers have the appropriate materials for them). Reinforcing this information both at home and school will help keep our students safe.

Academic and Career Exploration (ACE) This year, we have adopted a 50 minute period for academic and career exploration (ACE). On Wednesdays and Thursdays, students will report to their ACE teacher after the first block period. A portion of the period will be used to review school-wide lessons (e.g. digital citizenship, emergency drills, college and career information, etc.) The remainder of the period will be used for students to work with any of their teachers for academic support and/ or enrichment opportunities. For our seniors, this time may also be used to work with faculty mentors on senior projects.
 Performing Arts Updates

On Tuesday, August 22, at 6:00 P.M., we will be hosting an important information meeting for all parents with students in a Performing Arts class (dance, vocal music, instrumental music, and theater).

Any student in a Performing Arts class must return signed concussion and liability release forms before they are eligible to participate in any performance or rehearsal. Parents, if you did not receive the forms electronically, you may pick up a copy from the Main Office.

 Butter Braid Fundraiser
Vocal Music will be selling yummy Butter Braids from August 23-September 6. These delicious pastries come frozen, you just Thaw-Rise-Bake for a fantastic treat. There will be samples available at the Performing Arts Parent night outside the choir room. Butter Braids will be delivered the end of August just in time for all of your fall potlucks and holiday parties! Talk to any Vocal Music student for more information or email Mrs. Abbe at bevin.abbe@simivalleyusd.org
All proceeds will go towards student costumes and trip participation.
